I've been cooking for one or two people most of my adult life, and - as you surely know - it's hasn't been easy. Most cookbooks have recipes that serve 4 or more; most roasting pans are sized so you can cook a 16-pound turkey but not one small game hen; most slow cookers make enough chili to feed a battalion. And just try finding a 6-inch glass pie plate! Well, the cookbooks are out there, the one-hen roasting pan is out there, the smaller slow cooker is out there. I know because I found them, and all I had to do was look... and look... and look... and look... and look some more. And I'm still looking for that glass pie plate.
This website it my answer. One place that lists all the books I know of for cooking for one or two; all the smaller-sized equipment I know of, recipes I've found or developed that don't require conversions (don't you just hate recipes that serve six that list one egg as an ingredient?), plus tips I've learned along the way that make life easier when you're cooking for just you in a "Serves 4" world. In short, anything and everything pertaining to the solo cook.
But this site's not just me. After all, why would I build a site that tells me only what I already know? Think of this site as a club -- I'm going to start by putting in what I can find, but I'm going to build ways where you can add information as well. Maybe you have a cookbook that I don't know about or you've found that 6-inch glass pie plate I'm still looking for. For now, send me an e-mail and I'll add the information in, but eventually you will be able to add items and recipes yourself.
I'm excited about this site, and I hope you will be as well. Cooking for one or two people is like being left-handed in a right-handed world - nothing is quite as easy as it should be. But two heads are better than one (and two hundred are better than two) - and this will be one place you can count on to be devoted to the world of the solo cook.
Yours truly,
Karen
